| Franjo Busic, Director of Academia Cravatica, a non-profit organization for the preservation of the cravat (i.e., tie or necktie), as part of the Croatian and world heritage. ‘While the Croats first wore the cravat, they are very appreciative of the other cultures around the world that have embraced and perfected it. Now, in fact, they are proud to say that the cravat is an important aspect of world culture as it worn across so many cultures while represents universal human values…which is why they are so committed to preserving and promoting it as a proud part of their heritage. Academia Cravatica established “International Day of the Cravat” in 2008 and it now occurs every year on October 18th,’ he says. Prior to the 1990s, it was not common knowledge that the tie (or rather, the “cravat,” originated in Croatia). Most people assumed it was from France. So, in 1990, the “Croata” brand was born in Zagreb to create a world cravat brand to promote Croatia as the “Homeland of the Cravat.” Shortly after, Academia Cravatica, a not for profit organization, was also founded (in 1997) to promote and preserve the heritage of the cravat. Academia Cravatica and the CROATA store and brand are closely linked as they assert that selling ties is not what it is all about… It’s about creating an global identity for the country, just as the Swiss brought the world their legendary Toblerone and the Germans gave the world the Benz car. While the Croats first wore the cravat, they are very appreciative of the other cultures around the world that have embraced and perfected it. Now, in fact, they are proud to say that the cravat is an important aspect of world culture as it worn across so many cultures while represents universal human values…which is why they are so committed to preserving and promoting it as a proud part of their heritage. Those uniformed men you see in this video are part of the Cravat Regiment, an official division of the country’s current forces. They take their job and work very seriously. They occasionally guard the entrance of the town’s main Croata store, but are regularly standing guard at St. Mark’s Church. They then parade through the town every Saturday and Sunday, before doing a very official changing of the guard ceremony at St. Mark’s Square. I’d say they take their work as seriously as the Grenadier Guards at Buckingham Palace. Other than weekends, they perform changing of the guards on special days. So, on October 18th, in celebration of the International Day of the Cravat, there is an official changing of the guards ceremony. The youngest member of the Cravat Regiment is still in high school, and appears in my video. He’s the one of the left.
